Our fearless leader, John Keiser, started a “Be Great Today” initiative that really took our the OneCoast team by storm. All of the OneCoast family thinks about this as they work and play! We caught John for a few minutes to ask him what this means to him and what can you (yes, you) do to “be great today”!
Q: What does “be great today” mean to you?
JK: “Be Great Today” means that you work at doing everything -every little and big thing- each day, with the focus of it being your very best effort. It is a frame of mind. Making the bed. Making coffee. Each email you send. Each conversation you have. Every project you work on. Every conversation with a spouse, significant other, or family member. That if you truly put forth your very best effort in every task you do, you will accomplish more. You will be a better person. And, you will positively impact others. Then, you sleep well at night. And get up the next day and work just as hard to “Be Great Today” again. Day after day. Week after week. Year after year. There are many clichés that capture this……”if it is worth doing, it is worth doing well”. Or, “it takes twice as long to redo something as it does to do it right the first time”. But to me it is about focus. Focus on giving your very best effort on the little and big things you do. Every day. Achieving it each day is impossible. But the effort to achieve it has amazing results.
Q: What can you do to “be great today”?
JK: It is not about doing something that no one else has ever done. It is about doing everything you do with your very best effort, each and every day. Hold the door for someone. Really listen to your kids. Really focus on the topic at hand in a meeting. If you are exercising, don’t just go through the motions, put forth your very best effort.
Q: How do you encourage others to do the same?
JK: This is a “lead by example” kind of thing. And, it is hard to do each and every day. We are human and it is hard to do your very best effort on everything you do every day. But, if you strive for it, you will hit it more days than not. And, if you are doing that, you will influence others in a positive way.
Q: What is your favorite motivational quote?
JK: Oh boy…..there are so many. Here are two of my favorites….
- “Be the Change You Want to See in The World”.- Mahatma Ghandi
- “The true test of a person’s character is what they do when no one is watching” – John Wooden
