Boy Oh Boy!

LittleFair_BibThough current birth rates do not rival those of the baby boomer period or even the early 1990’s, that has not stopped the baby industry from experiencing a boom of its own.  This billion dollar industry continues to grow, with manufacturers competing to impress the millennial mom with innovative and trendy products.  People are choosing to have children later in life, which contributes to the lower birth rates, but also to larger budgets for moms and therefore the desire for premium products. As this industry continues to boom, market trends continue to change and evolve to cater to these new socially conscious moms with high purchase power and an eye for the perfect Instagram.

Let’s hear it for the boys! One trend that cannot be overlooked was the performance of boyLittleFair_SleepNplay baby product over girl.  For the first time in a long time, we saw boy product outperform girl in the baby gifts arena. C.R. Gibson has been specializing in premiere baby books since its conception in 1870, of which girl designs always held its place at the top.  However, we saw that change this past season.  Clearly moms couldn’t get enough of all the nautical, sports and grandpa’s t-shirt design themes for boys displayed throughout the gift channel.  Traditional boy designs continue to be best-sellers, but we are now seeing the emergence of brighter colors for boy such as greens, oranges and yellows. Millennial moms are gravitating more towards the colorful aesthetic as an adorable alternative to tradition. This design aesthetic can be seen with C.R. Gibson’s “Little Fair” and “Dear One” collections from their boutique baby brand “Baby Dumpling”.

One trend that cannot go without mention is that of finding the perfect bib and burp set.  This essential baby accessory is not only a necessity for moms but also a means of capturing the essence of mom and baby’s lifestyle.  Whether taking baby to church, family events or shopping at Whole Foods, finding the right bib and burp set is a must.

With the power of social media, baby apparel and gifts will continue to be a booming industry.  Every new mom is looking for that perfect photo-op with their baby to share, therefore having the right outfit and accessories for baby is key. Bright colors and boy designs reigned this season among the gift trends. With holidays and the New Year right around the corner, we cannot wait to see what new products await for baby.
