Adventures in Miniature Gardening Classes

mini garden 1Brown Dog Gardens is a unique, beautiful, and rustic gardening center located in Alpine, Texas. Last summer, they hosted two Fairy Garden classes. For families and young customers, Brown Dog Gardens offered one morning class just for this particular group. A second class was offered in the afternoon to adults only where they offered yummy Sangrias. From the photos below, you can see that Brown Dog Gardens set up long tables for customers to work from. This allowed for customer interaction between each other and their staff.

Here are some additional tips on hosting your own Fairy Garden Event:

  • Make sure your inventory is well-stocked and ready for sales with all the planters, accessories, soil, pebbles, and tools.
  • Invite local artists to be a part of your event and have them on hand to help your customers with creative ideas and direction.
  • Consider charging one fee that would include one planter, soil, and pebbles. Then sell the Studio M Fairy Garden accessories separately.
  • Request your customers to register for the class so that you can plan for space and seating accordingly.
  • Serve up small appetizers and beverages to your customers such as fresh fruit and vegetables, lemonade, and iced tea.
  • Take plenty of pictures and post them on your Facebook page.
  • Lastly, set up a “clean-up” station for your customers.

Artful ReflectionsQ: Tell us a little more about your product offerings?  What’s unique about your products vs. other manufacturers?

A:  DEMDACO offers a very diverse product offering within key categories.  These include: 1. Gift & Home Accents, 2. baby plush & gift, 3. Fashion & personal care, 4. Seasonal, 5. Entertaining.  We believe that our products lift the spirit for customers by developing items that showcase inspirational messaging, celebrating relationships, and making people happy.  Our internal creative teams and outside artist partners are adept at capturing just the right mix of art, innovation, and message that helps our product have strong sell-through for retailers.

Q: Where do you get your inspirations and trend direction from for new products?

A:  Our product comes from a diverse network of creative people who all contribute to our categories and formats.  We walk partners through our goals for each season and are able to bring them into the process at early stages.  Kelly Rae Roberts has collaborated with DEMDACO for many years.  Through collaboration, she has inspired home accents, garden product, fashion, and coming soon… baby collections.  Because our company was founded on artist businesses, we also receive independent artist submissions from around the globe.

Q: What do you love most about attending the markets?

A:  The markets are a great place to get a pulse on retailer perception of your brand, are we meeting their needs, what we can do better.  The product and marketing teams love the interaction and ability to learn from each attendee.  This is also one of the few industries where similar companies talk about their respective business environments.  All companies have the same goal of meeting consumer/customer needs and respect each company’s unique position in the market.  Sharing business climate updates while maintaining your proprietary info is beneficial.  This is extremely unique of any industry.

Willow TreeQ: Why do customers love your products?

A:  We receive thousands of letters per year.  We route them around the company each week.  The letters keep the pulse on whether our products meet their intended needs.  Willow Tree is a benchmark for how products can have a connection with consumers. DEMDACO products are there when people get married, have babies, go through something challenging, or just enjoying time with friends.  We are grateful for being able to speak to milestones, occasions, and key events of a family.  It’s why DEMDACO employees enjoy what they do each day.

Q: What does the future hold for DEMDACO?  Maybe a small sneak peek into future product expansions, ideas, etc.

A: Over the last few years we’ve built our baby business.  It’s gone extremely well and now we can thoughtfully expand in other areas.  I’m most excited about our focus in 2 areas:  Entertaining and Fashion.  With entertaining, we have one of the strongest equity lines in the industry with Glass Fusion and Glass Fusion Pop-In’s.  Our new lines: Uncork & Unwind, Made For You, and Table Talk are all off to a great start and enhance our offering in entertaining.  With Fashion, we’ve seen a tremendous increase in sell-through of our City Wrap lines and byDesign scarves.  _Y5G0931We focus more on where artist solutions can be more prevalent and our scarves are works of art you can wear.
