Q: Is it illegal to serve alcohol in my store? (Note: This particular store is located in California.)

A: Most counties set the liquor laws. We suggest checking there since each county may have a different law. The county office or local chamber of commerce may be able to tell you or point you in the right direction.

Another great resource is the building owner. They would be able to tell you what they were permitted/not permitted to do with and/or around the building per county/city codes.

Ask Us: 12 Days of Christmas

askus2lWith the holidays right around the corner, we have received some questions on holiday marketing.

Q: Do you have any experience with developing a 12 Days of Christmas flyer?

A: There are many free tools/programs found online and within any software suite that can allow you to customize pre-made templates.

As for the “12 Days” promotions/items, you can use the “12 Days of Christmas” song as some inspiration by using each day. For example, on the first day (partridge in a pear tree), you can have a “Buy One, Get One (free or xx% off) all tree trimmings/ornaments. For the fifth day (five gold rings), you can discount jewelry.

If you want something a little more generic, you can always offer a free gift with purchase, free gift wrapping or even providing some hot chocolate or cider as your customers shop. There has also been success is premade gift bundles/packages. You can bundle hand lotion, a manicure set and nail polish and sell it as one price versus selling each item individually. Many shoppers turn to their favorite stores for gift suggestions. This makes shopping easy for the customer and you! Other retailers have also collected non-perishable items and/or clothing on a certain day to be taken to a local food bank/drop off location.

5 Quick Holiday Tips for the Busy Retailer

Santa’s elves are busy at work and they know you are too! So we want to make this special edition short, sweet, and to the point. Here are 5 quick tips to make the most of your holly, jolly 4th quarter.

Tip #1 – Gifts for everyone on their shopping lists

Help your customers remember all those people they need to get a special gift for this holiday season. And have that list posted throughout the store. Or take Option 2 to your local printer and have a few printed with an easel back so you can easily display the signage on your shelves and tabletops.

Tip #2 – Feed your staff

Cater a staff lunch on Black Friday or on Saturdays during December. Their renewed energy and the support from you will speak volumes. They will appreciate your gesture and acknowledgement of them. A happy staff will perform better for you and provide better customer service to your patrons. Do you have connections with local caterers? Consider promoting their business in your store if they will consider offering you a special discount


Tip #3 – Small Business Saturday is Saturday, November 29th

Tip #4 – Host a one day only Flash Sale

Looking for a way to surprise and excite your customers this holiday season? Then consider hosting a one day only Flash Sale in your store. Whether you offer a one-time discount or a free gift with purchase, you will create a real sense of urgency with your customers that will help drive traffic to your store. Make sure to utilize your email marketing and social media outlets to promote your Flash Sale. Send out an email the day before and on the day of your event to your customers. Use a catchy Subject Line to draw their attention. Plus use your store’s Facebook page to post updates about your event along with pictures of customers taking advantage of your sale
