Woodstock Chimes | Tuning Inspirations

Some of the most memorable Woodstock Chimes are the ones tuned to melodies and scales heard throughout the world from ancient times to the present.

The very first Woodstock Chime was created because of a tuning inspiration. Garry had read of the Scale of Olympos, a 7th century musical scale from a Greek flute player, but couldn’t hear it, because the notes could not be played on modern instruments. He cut aluminum tubes to the exact frequencies of the notes of the scale and thought what better way to hear music from this scale than to have the notes be played randomly by the wind? Garry created the Chimes of Olympos and a business was born. Not only is the chime’s music beautiful, it turns everyone who hangs it into a musician!

There are Woodstock Chimes tuned to scales from Asia; our Magical Mystery Chime – Taj Mahal is tuned to a scale from Northern India, the Chimes of Kyoto, which is tuned to an ancient Japanese scale found on early zither instruments, and the Chimes of Java which is tuned to the scale of the gamelan degung, a traditional Javanese musical ensemble.

You can also find Woodstock Chimes tuned to famous songs and melodies, like the Woodstock Happy Birthday Chime, the Woodstock Ode to Joy Chime and the Star-Spangled Banner Chime.

Famous composers also serve as inspirations for Woodstock Chimes tunings. The Chimes of Mozart, Pachelbel Canon Chime and Chimes of Bach are three examples of chimes tuned to music by great composers.

Woodstock Chimes have a rich, pure sound quality that comes from premium materials, expert design and fabrication methods and, of course, precise tuning. The length of each tube is honed and the sound is checked using an electronic tuning system to ensure the note is correct and the sound is pure. Some call this “precision tuned,” some call it “musically tuned.” We simply call it beautiful.
